Windows 8 / 8.1 first introduced the Windows Store, which became the Microsoft Store after a few iterations of Windows 10. The store was not yet large; it hosts some popular applications, but many users still use desktop applications as they are not subject to the same restrictions as these UWP applications.
Microsoft Store Programs
By installing an app from the Microsoft Store app, you can view your entire library in one place and update the apps en masse. The apps do not need to be uninstalled, and the update process is seamless and in place.
Installing apps from the Microsoft Store app is also pretty easy; you do not have to find out which right download button to click.
Uninstall Microsoft Store Applications
Microsoft Store applications cannot be removed from Control Panel, and this is how Windows users remove apps for years.
Note: This message refers to removing apps from the Microsoft Store and NOT how to uninstall the Microsoft Store app yourself. Uninstalling the Microsoft Store app is possible but not advisable.
Uninstall Microsoft Store Applications from Settings
The easiest way to uninstall Microsoft Store apps is through the Settings app.
- Make the Settings app (Win + I keyboard shortcut).
- Go to Applications> Applications and Features.
- Browse through the list of programs, and select the app to uninstall.
- Click on the Remove button and the app will be removed within minutes.
Uninstall Microsoft Store Apps from Start Menu / Apps List
A Microsoft Store app can be removed directly from the Start menu if pinned to it, or from the program list.
- Make the Start menu.
- Go to the Programs’ list.
- Look for the app to remove.
- Right-click on the app and select Uninstall from the context menu.
Missing option missing
If you have tried both of the above two options and the removal option is missing, it probably means that the app is not from the Microsoft Store. Many desktop programs have customized their icons to better fit the Windows 10 UI and Start menu.
These programs can be removed from the control panel, or in rare cases, can be run with their own uninstall programs that you can run in the application list in the program directory.
Most applications that you install in the Microsoft Store have a computer version, e.g. A VLC player can be installed from the Microsoft Store, but the desktop application can still be downloaded from the official website. There are exceptions to this, e.g. Minecraft in the Microsoft Store and the Java version differ in features.
