How to add/remove widgets on Windows 11

Widgets are the components that seem to come and go on both desktop and mobile operating systems. iOS has widgets, Android has widgets, macOS has widgets, and now Windows 11 has widgets.

When OS adds widgets, it needs to make them easily accessible but still keep them out of the way of everything else. A widget is useful because it can be used / accessed quickly but users are rarely willing to sacrifice easy on-screen access areas for widgets.

Get to widgets on Windows 11

Widgets have their own dashboard on Windows 11. The panel can be accessed by clicking the widget button on the taskbar.

If you click on the button the panel will open and you can scroll through your widgets. When you click outside of this panel, it closes automatically.

Add widgets to Windows 11

Windows 11 comes with out-of-the-box widgets. Once released to the stable channel, third-party widgets will be available (via apps in the Microsoft Store).

  1. Click on the widgets button on the taskbar.
  2. Scroll down to the end of the widgets and click Add widgets.
  3. Click on the add extra button next to widget.
  4. Click on the close button at the top right to return to the widgets panel.

Remove widgets on Windows 11

A widget can be removed from the widget panel at any time. You can remove stock widgets in the same way you can third-party widgets.

  1. Click on the Button widgets on the taskbar to open the Widgets panel.
  2. Click on the more options button at the top right of the widget you want to remove.
  3. Click Remove widget in menu.
  4. The widget will be removed.

Note: Widgets are associated with apps installed on Windows 11. Removing a widget will not remove it. If you want to uninstall a widget, find out which app was added, and uninstall the app. If you do not want to uninstall the app, you will need to keep the widget as well.

Drag & drop widgets

When a widget is added to the widgets panel, it is added to the bottom. Unfortunately, it seems that the order cannot be changed unless you are willing to remove them and add them again.

Resize widget

Just like the Start Menu tiles on Windows 10, the size of the widgets on Windows 11 can be changed.

  1. Click on the icon widgets on the taskbar to open the widgets panel.
  2. Click on the more options button at the top right of the widget you want to resize.
  3. Choose a size from the table.

Note: Widgets can be small, medium or large but not all widgets support all three sizes.

Conclusion

Windows 11 is not the first version of Windows to have widgets. In fact, Windows users have been adding a few devices to their desktop for ages with Rainmeter. There was something like Windows 7 called tools. For Microsoft, this is a recap of an old feature that was released.
