How to change the default browser on Windows 11

Windows 11 ships with the Microsoft Edge browser as the default browser. It is based on Chromium and seems to be considered by many to be better than Chrome. You can still install any other browser of your choice on Windows 11 and set it as the default browser. The process takes some time but you only have to do it once.

  3. Choose Deficiencies of apps.
  4. Go through list of apps and select the browser you want to set it as the default browser.
  5. Select all file types and click on the options button (arrow button similar to share image).

  1. Select Switch Anyway if Windows 11 is trying to force you to continue using Microsoft Edge.

  5. Select the browser you want to use.

Note: you do not need to change the default browser for all file types. There will be enough conversion for common internet file types and enough commands eg HTM, HTML, MailTo, HTTP, and HTTPS.

  5. S.select the browser / app that is reflected in the results.
  6. From the pop-up, select the browser you want to use instead.
  7. Click OK.

Note: you can use this method to change the default application for all file types and applications.

Conclusion

Windows 11 gives users more control over the files handled by their default browser. Users can choose to keep Edge as the default browser for some file types and change for others. The process is longer because there is no option to change everything with one click as in Windows 10. That said, Windows 11 makes it much easier to find and modify the default application for a specific file type compared to Windows 10.
