How to fix Access denied error on Windows 10 administrator account

All Windows 10 systems have an administration account. If you only configure one user account on a Windows 10 system, it will be automatically set up as the system administrator. You can add other user accounts and transfer administrative rights to one of them.

This admin account controls what can and cannot be installed on the system, what rules are in place for the anti-virus, parental controls, account creation and deletion, and more.

The administrator account on Windows 10 controls most things but runs into folders that you can’t access or edit. This can be due to a problem with permissions, system files, or the account you are using. Try the solutions below.

1. Enable Windows Defender

If you are using a third-party antivirus, it may restrict access to certain packages because it is thought to harm you. This is supplemented by the antiviral and may be useful in some cases.

Try changing the antivirus setting to disable this. If there is no option in disabling this additional protection, turn off the anti-virus and enable Windows Defender.

Windows Defender is present as a stock app on Windows 10 and will not restrict access to files and folders.

2. Run as administrator

If you see an error denied access when using a third-party app. Not all apps will run with admin rights when you open them even if you are logged into the admin account.

  1. Open the Start the record.
  2. Look for the app and right click on it.
  3. From the context menu, select Run as administrator.
  4. Confirm with the admin account username and password.

3. Open File Explorer with admin rights

If you are trying to open a file or folder, and you see a denied access error, open File Explorer with admin rights.

  1. Open Executive Manager.
  2. Go to Process tabs and look for Windows Explorer.
  3. Right click on it and select End task.
  4. In Task Manager, go to File> Run a new task.
  5. In the run box, enter explorerher.exe and enable the Create this activity with administrative privileges option.
  6. Tap on Enter.
  7. In the File Explorer window that opens, navigate to the file or folder you want to access and open it.

4. Check file / folder permissions

Your user may not be allowed to access the file. Permissions can be revoked even for an administrator or the folder / file may be TrustedInstaller and you may need to take over ownership.

  1. Right click on the file / folder and select Properties from the context table.
  2. Go to Security tab.
  3. Select the administrator account from and check what it is on permission in the Permissions section.
  4. If the account does not have permission, click Edit and allow it.
  5. Next, click Advanced on the same tab.
  6. Click Change next to the owner.
  7. In the Name Enter a name to select a range, enter your username and click Check Names to confirm.
  8. Click Ok.
  9. Apply the change, and apply it to all subfolders and directories.
  10. Open the file / folder and you will be able to access it.

5. Account to the administration group

Your user account may not be part of the admin group on the system. This can happen when a third-party antivirus is installed.

  1. Tap on the Win + R keyboard shortcut. to open the run box.
  2. In the run box, enter lusrmgr.msc and tap Enter.
  3. In the left-hand column, select Groups.
  4. In the pan on the right, Two-click administrators.
  5. In the window that opens, click Add.
  6. Enter your user name and verify it by clicking on Check Names.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Apply changes and then try to open the file or folder.

Note: This is a Windows 10 Pro solution. It will not work on Windows 10 Home.

6. Quickly disable UAC

The message denied is access to a security cover that comes with Windows 10. It can be disabled even though you should not leave it like that permanently. Change UAC quick settings, access the file / folder, and then change the settings back to what they were.

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. go to User Accounts.
  3. Choose User accounts.
  4. Click Change user account control settings.
  5. Move the slide to the very low pound / position.
  6. Click OK.

7. Update Windows 10

The message denied by access can be fixed by applying upcoming updates in Windows 1o. As a rule, you should always try to maintain your system.

  1. Open the Configuration application with keyboard shortcut Win + I.
