If you want to play PUBG on PC, you need to download it on Steam. Steam handles everything from download to installation and launch. If you are not running Steam, it will open in the background when you run the Steam game. It will run in the background and if it does not, you will not be able to play your game.

Steam is essential if you want to play any Steam game. If you fail to start a STEAM error every time you launch PUBG, you will not be able to play the game. The chance is, you will not be able to enter the lobby, let alone enter your game or collect one of your daily prizes. Here’s how you can correct the error.

Steam restart

Steam usually runs at the start which means it is always running in the background. Normally, this should not be a problem but when you see that STEAM failed to start, it may be time for a client to restart.

  1. Right-click Steam in the system tray.
  2. Select Exit from the context menu.
  3. Open Steam again.
  4. Open PUBG.

Run PUBG with Administrative rights

Games do not normally need to be run under administrative rights but the error “STEAM did not start” may be a licensing issue. If you have recently updated PUBG, you may need to first run the game with admin rights to get rid of this error.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to C: Program Files Steam steamapps common TslGame Binaries Win64
  3. Right-click the EXE file of the game and select Run as administrator.

Verify file integrity

The error “did not start STEAM” may indicate a problem with the game ie, PUBG files. Steam can find out what’s wrong with the files, download new files, and configure replacements.

  1. Steam Open.
  2. Go to the Library.
  3. Right-click PUBG in the left-hand column and select Properties from the context menu.
  4. Go to the Local Files tab.
  5. Click the Verify game files integrity button.
  6. Allow Steam to repair the files and then open the game.

Open in Windowed mode

Set the launch options for PUBG to Windowed mode.

  1. Steam Open.
  2. Go to the Library.
  3. Right-click PUBG in the left-hand column and select Properties.
  4. Go to the General tab.
  5. In the Launch options field, enter -windowed.
  6. Restart the game.

Reset Steam and PUBG

If all else fails, you can reinstall both Steam and PUBG. Doing so will fix problems with both.

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Go to Programs> Install Program.
  3. Select PUBG and click the Uninstall button.
  4. Select Steam and click the Uninstall button.
  5. Once the uninstall for both is complete, download and install Steam.
  6. Once Steam is installed, download PUBG.
