How to fix Surface Pen not writing on Surface Tablet

The Surface pen works with the Surface pen. Not the best drawing tool but it works well enough for document marking and note taking. The Surface pen pairs easily with the tablet and Windows 10 will install the necessary drivers for it. Since both the tablet and the pen are Microsoft products, the installation is anonymous.

The Surface pen can draw and there is a button on the side. Button function varies depending on the app you are using but the pen tip will usually do the same thing across all apps. If the pen is not working ie you can’t draw with it but the buttons work fine, check if the app you are using supports drawing or sensing. You can try it out in the OneNote app. If the pen does not work, try the solutions below.

1. Check device battery

Make sure both the pen and the board cost enough. The tablet may not be able to plug in from the pen if it is low on power. Similarly, if the pen is low on power, it may not work as well. Charge everything and then try again.

2. Unpair and pair machine

Try resetting the Surface pen and pairing it again. Just like turning something off and on it can solve problems with, without resetting and pairing the pen to solve this issue.

  1. Open the Options app with the keyboard shortcut Win + I.
  2. go to Tools.
  3. Choose Tooth-blue.
  4. Select the Cream pen.
  5. Tap on it Remove tool.
  6. When removed, pair the pen again.

3. Restart surface plate

The Surface tablet, like any other tablet, is always kept on. It can be disabled but tablets are not used as such. Try turning the Surface tab off and then again.

  1. Press and hold the bring up button and the power button on the Surface board.
  2. Release after 20 seconds.
  3. Press the power button to turn the tablet back on.

4. Install driver updates

Check for driver updates for the Surface pen. Make sure the pen is repaired by your system.

  1. Open Device manager.
  2. Expand Human interface tools.
  3. Right-click the Surface pen and select Update driver.
  4. Take a look online for driver updates.
  5. Install available driver updates.

5. Restore driver updates

Some users have been able to fix problems with the pen by restoring a driver update.

  1. Open Device manager.
  2. Expand Human interface tools.
  3. Double click on the surface pen.
  4. Go to Driver tab.
  5. Click Rollback Driver.

6. Install Windows updates

If you have received a Windows update, install it. Updates often resolve issues with software and drivers.

  1. Open the Options app with the keyboard shortcut Win + I.
  2. go to Update and security.
  3. Select the Update tab.
  4. Click Check for updates.
  5. Install available updates.
  6. Restart the system if needed.

7. Update surface pen firmware

Just like Windows 10, the Surface Pen also gets firmware updates.

  1. Make sure that the a pen is paired for your system.
  2. Download the Surface Hub pen update tool from Microsoft.
  3. Run the app and will update the pen firmware.

The Surface pen is a hard tool and can be physically damaged. If all else fails, check the device. The tip can be damaged. It may be repayable or you may need to buy a new one.
