Slack has support for multiple accounts, and for multiple workspaces. Multiple workplaces can be linked to one account eg, you have one email account and you have been invited to multiple workstations through it. These workplaces are easy to move within Slack, and you can hide a workspace if you want. That said, if you want to leave Slack’s workplace, you can.
Leave Slack workplace
It’s hard to leave a workplace in Slack; owners are invited to a workplace ie the person who set up the workplace. When you engage in such a workplace, the status of this workplace is a ‘normal’ workplace. To leave, you must contact the workplace owner or administrator.
Another option is to sign out of the workplace. You can still be tagged in messages but you will not receive notifications for any activity from the workplace in Slack.
Leave Slack workspace – Turn off the account
Cancellation is an end-use control. If you cannot contact Workplace Administration, you will instead cancel your workplace account.
To do this, follow these steps.
- Open Slack on your desktop and select the workspace you want to exit.
- Once selected, click on your profile icon at the top right and select Profile from the menu.
- In the panel that opens, click the More button and select Account Options.
- Opens a new tab in your default browser.
- Scroll down to the Deactivate account section.
- Click the Deactivate account button.
- Your account in that workplace will be deactivated and you cannot be posted or named directly or in a channel.
Reactivate Slack account
As an end user, you have the option to voluntarily deactivate your account in Slack’s workspace, however, you will not be able to reactivate at will. To return to the workplace, you must receive an invitation back from the workplace administrator or owner. There is no way around this so if you choose to cancel an account at work, make sure you have no intention of returning or are able to return.
Conclusion
Slack workplaces are basically large organizations created by one individual or company. They are not open spaces for the public to come together and that is why entry and exit to a workplace is not open. If you entered your Slack workplace using company email, you may not be able to cancel your account. It largely depends on the email you are using and the preferences your company has added.
