How to mount ISO images on Windows 10

Optical discs are slowly disappearing. You will find low end laptops and standard desktop builders can be equipped with an optical disk reader but the technology has become much more common. USBs and external drivers are now the most popular way to transfer data when online transfer is not practical or possible. ISO images or ISO files are uploaded as a virtual disk. The OS assumes that the system has an optical disk driver, a CD or DVD is inserted, and it is able to read the installation files.

Windows 10 can natively upload an ISO image.

Method 1

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to the ISO file.
  3. Select the ISO file.
  4. Take a look at the ribbon and you will see a New Manage tab.
  5. Select the Manage tab.
  6. Click on the Putan Mount.

  1. Open File Explorer and go to this PC.
  2. The the uploaded ISO file will appear with the other connected drivers.
  3. Double-click the driver to open it.

Method 2

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to the ISO image.
  3. Right-click on the file and select Mount from the context table.
  4. Navigate to this PC.
  5. The erection an image will appear with other disks.

Unmount ISO image

Once you have accessed and used the file (s) in the ISO image, you can extract the ISO image.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. go to This PC.
  3. Right-click the uploaded ISO image.
  4. Select Eject from the context table.
  5. The ISO image will remain unopened.


ISO images are common with obscure software and operating system files. This is the best way to distribute software that requires a lot of complex files to be installed. With some ISO files, you can try to use extraction software. The extracted folder will show the same files that you would see if you had uploaded the image and it is very likely that you will see a configuration file that you can run. That said, it may not install properly. The best way to install anything circulated as an ISO image is to set it up as a real driver.
