How to set a Slack status

Instant messaging apps like Slack provide an easy and quick way for everyone within a workplace to contact others. Unlike email, it is accepted that there will be no delay in receiving a response since the other person is online. That is rare. Messages can sit unread or unanswered if the recipient is busy.

Set Slack Status

You can set your Slack status busy and you can snag your notifications if you are away but Slack has better, informative options that you can use to set it as your status. For example, if you are in a meeting, you can set the status to say so, and set the status to automatically disappear.

How to set Slack status

To override your Slack status;

  1. Click on your profile icon at the top right.
  2. Select the Set status as off option.

To set Slack status;

  1. Click on your profile icon at the top right.
  2. Select Update your status.
  3. Select one of the automated status messages: In Meeting, Out Sick, Vacationing, etc.
  4. Change when you want to clear the status and click Save.

If none of the default Slack messages fit, you can create a custom message.

  1. Click on your profile icon at the top right.
  2. Enter a custom status message
  3. Add emoji if you like.
  4. Open the Clear After button and select when Slack should automatically clear the message.
  5. Check the ‘Stop notifications’ option if you want to stop notifications while this status is active.

Messages of rest

Slack users can block messages without linking them to a specific status. To stop messages on Slack;

  1. Click on your profile icon at the top right.
  2. Select the Pause Messages option from the menu.
  3. Select a strategy from the submenu or select Custom to select a custom date and time until the calls are stopped.
  4. You can create a record when calls are paused / stopped by clicking Set Message Table.

Conclusion

Messaging apps help reduce the number of emails you receive but you will always find that some people expect an immediate response. To be ‘online’ it can be used to be ready to answer ten different people all at once. Unfortunately, you cannot enter notification options by each user or channel. If you find a particular channel, group, or user tends to be too active at a time when you are working, you can move them. You must remember to disconnect them as there is no registration feature for it.
