How to start and join a Slack huddle

Slack is a messaging tool. It is not a video conferencing tool although you can record and send videos to a channel or to an individual. In contrast, many workplace-focused enterprise and productivity tools tend to have both built-in messaging and video conferencing tools eg Microsoft Teams. This means that Slack is lacking in the area and to fill this gap, there are bumps.

Slack Huddle

Slack huddle is an audio call. This is a key Slack feature so it will not be possible for those with a free Slack workspace / account to use it. A huddle is an ongoing event within a channel. As long as the event is active, you can join it. The feature is available on both desktop and Slack mobile apps.

Start Slack Huddle – Desk

To start a Huck Slack on the desktop, follow these steps.

  1. Open the Slack app.
  2. Select the direct message channel or thread that you want to start inbound.
  3. In the left navigation column, look at the bottom and you will see a headset switch icon. Click on it to start the huddle. Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut Control + Shift + H or Command + Shift + H to launch a button.

Come with the Slack – Desktop huddle

Once a huddle has started, you can join it by following these steps.

  1. Open the Slack app.
  2. Select the channel in which the huddle is active.
  3. Click on the mic icon to enter.

Note: You may not receive a warning when a huddle is active in a channel. Depending on your notification preferences however, you can set alerts for a DM channel or thread where you will be notified when a huddle starts.

Start Huddle Slack – iOS / Android

To start Slack Huddle on the Slack Android or iOS app, follow these steps.

  1. Open the Slack app on your phone.
  2. Tap on the icon at the top right to start the fort.

Join Huck Slack – iOS / Android

To join a Slack huddle on the Slack Android or iOS app, follow these steps.

  1. Open the Slack app on your phone.
  2. Go to the channel in which the huddle is active.
  3. Tap on the icon at the top right to enter the huddle.

Conclusion

One booth can have up to 50 participants. You can split your screen in a chunk but you can’t enable video streaming for it which means Slack doesn’t have a video conferencing device yet. You can invite people to huddle once it’s active.
