Most of the photos taken today are taken on smartphones. The camera on a smartphone captures more of an image when it takes a picture. The camera has access to the many senses, data, and device configurations on the phone and much of this information is captured when a photo is taken. For example, if you want to find out if a photo was taken on an iPhone, you can usually check by looking at the photo’s EXIF data.
EXIF data
EXIF data is stored by all cameras, not just those on our phones. Professional cameras will save information about the camera settings used to take a photo but phone cameras have access to more information so they store more of it as EXIF data. For example, a photo captured on a phone may include the coordinates of latitude and longitude for the exact location the photo was taken.
EXIF data is very easy to see if you know how to view it. Professional image management tools allow you to view everything stored while basic image viewers only show a small subset of the information instead of everything.
