Microsoft has announced the official release date for Windows 11; October 5, 2021.

According to the Windows distribution blog;

Today, we are very happy to announce that Windows 11 will start available on October 5, 2021. On this day, the free update to Windows 11 will start rolling out to compatible Windows 10 PCs and PCs that come preloaded with Windows 11 will start to be available for purchase.

The ad clears a few things for users who want to upgrade to Windows 11.

  • Windows 10 users will be able to upgrade to Windows 11 for free.
  • Laptops and desktops that come with Windows 11 pre-installed will be available before the release date.
  • Users with new PCs, and no OS installed, will be able to purchase a new license for Windows 11

Slow rolling

Similar to feature updates for Windows 10, Windows 11 is slowly rolling out to Windows 10 users who want to upgrade to the OS. This means;

  • Windows 11 will be available for a subset of Windows 10 users starting October 5, 2021.
  • Within a month or two, the rollout will expand and Windows 11 will be offered as a free update to more Windows 10 users through the Windows update.
  • Windows 11 will be released by June / July 2022.

How to upgrade to Windows 11 from Windows 10

As soon as Windows 11 becomes available to all users, Windows 10 users will be able to upgrade to Windows 11 via Windows Update.

Check PC eligibility

Windows 11 will be available with optional tools. In general, if you have TPM 2.0 or later and UEFI / Secure Boot, it is likely that your laptop will be eligible for the update.
