How to configure a proxy on Windows 10

A proxy is often considered the equivalent of a VPN. This is not true; a proxy is very different from a VPN. A VPN can provide proxy service on top of the private network it creates but the two are not identical.

Agent services

Authentication services are usually used in conjunction with VPN services but as separate services, they are used to give users access to certain geographic data eg, access to a server or website that is not get users in a specific country only.

Agent services are generally free and public, or paid and private.

Setting up a free proxy server on Windows 10 but a private proxy comes with a username and password that the stock Windows 10 proxy options do not serve.

Configure a proxy on Windows 10

No matter what type of proxy you have ie, public or private, you can use it on Windows 10. That said, by using a private proxy ie, there is one that has a username and password- watch differently than using a public proxy.

To configure a proxy on Windows 10, you need to have it;

  • For a public representative: IP no the address of the server and a port number.

A private proxy server requires authentication with a username and password. There is no setting on Windows 10 that allows you to enter your username and password, locking you out of using it.

The other option is using a third-party app. We recommend its use Charles Proxy but it is not free. It costs $ 50. A trial version is available with limits.

Arrange for a surrogate with Charles’ surrogate

To configure your proxy in Charles Proxy, download and install the app from here. Follow the steps below to set up the surrogate.

  1. To turn on the surrogate, return to Charles’ successor.
  2. go to Proxy> Windows Proxy.
  3. The a surrogate is now enabled.

Charles proxy is installed but by default, it only works in Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge. For other browsers, there is another step in the configuration process.

  2. go to Help> SSL Proxying> Save Charles root certificate.
  3. Save the certificate with the CER file extension.

  3. In the window that opens, go to Reliable Root Certifications Tab.
  4. Click on Import.

  1. Select the certificate you saved in step 3.
  2. Restart the browser.
  3. Make sure that the The ‘Windows Proxy’ option is enabled in Charles’ proxy and the proxy will start working in the browser.

Install Charles’ replacement certificate in Firefox

Installing Charles’ proxy certificate in Firefox is much easier.

  1. Open Charles Proxy.
  2. go to Proxy and enable Windows Proxy.
  3. Open Firefox.
  4. Visit him this connection.
  5. Firefox will ask you to save file.

  1. Go ahead and save it. Do not change the extension of this file.
  2. The install certificate by itself.
  3. Enter your username and password when promised.
  4. The a surrogate is now active.

There are some other options available for Charles ’surrogate like Fiddler but they don’t seem to have the option of arranging an outside surrogate. Unfortunately, Windows 10 does not support the use of a private proxy. Some people think that it does this for security reasons, but there is no official reason why Microsoft does not support private proxy.
