uTorrent Stuck on Connecting to Peers: Here’s How to FIX It

Torrent messengers are simple apps that allow P2P transfers. The transfers depend on the presence of the file in part or in whole on other systems that are willing to share or transfer the file to others who wish to download it.

You can use one of the many torrent clients available, most of them for free. UTorrent is one of the most popular torrent messengers you can use. It is, like most clients, simple to use. All you have to do is find a torrent to download it, click on it, and upload it to uTorrent.

uTorrent Stuck on Peer Engagement

uTorrent stuck on peer-to-peer connection / no download

A torrent follows a small, simple process before it starts downloading. This process involves connecting to a peer ie, the other computers that have the file or parts of the file, and then the download starts.

The whole process only takes a few seconds so if uTorrent is stuck on the peer-to-peer connection step, that’s not normal. You can wait a while to see if the download starts as some torrents download slow. If it doesn’t start, try the following solutions.

1. Try a different torrent

Part torrents can be offline ie, an peers are not online so the torrent cannot connect to them. This is usually evident from the torrent connection if it accounts for the active seeds / peers.

Feuch downloading a different torrent and see if it starts downloading. If it does, the problem is with the torrent. You need both looking for another torrent or wait for the peers to see the original one come online.

2. Try (or disconnect) a VPN

Torrents can be blocked in your country or on your network. If so, a VPN can help you get around it. If you are already using a VPN, disconnect it and then try to download the torrent. It is possible that torrents are blocked in your country but also that the VPN has connectivity issues.

3. Run uTorrent as admin

Although not usually required, uTorrent may be blocked by your OS and may require administrative rights before it can download file (s).

  1. Right click the uTorrent app.
  2. Choose Run as administrator.
  3. Feuch downloading the torrent.

4. Delete your resume.dat

UTorrent saves uTorrent download sessions to a file called reus.dat. If this file is corrupt, it may stop downloading.

  1. Quit uTorrent.
  2. Open File Explorer.
  3. Go to See the tab.
  4. Enable the Hidden file box.
  5. Navigate to the following place. Replace your username with your username.
  1. Delete named files restart.dat and restart.old.dat.
  2. Run uTorrent and try downloading a file again.

5. Check Windows firewall settings

UTorrent may have been blocked by the Windows firewall. If it is on, the app will not be able to download anything over a network.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Enter the following in the place bar and tap Enter.
Control PanelSystem and SecurityWindows Defender Firewall
  1. Click Allow an app or feature through a Windows firewall.
  2. Click ‘Change settings’ and authorize the change with the administrative account.
  3. Let uTorrent through a public and private network.
  4. Try downloading them in uTorrent again.

6. Turn on port forwarding

This in turn could depend on the type of file you are trying to download and where it came from but turning on port forwarding could cause the torrent to start.

  1. Open uTorrent.
  2. go to Options> Preferences.
  3. Select the Tab links.
  4. Enable the following three options.
    • Enable UPnP port mapping
    • Enable NAT-PMP port mapping
    • Add a Windows firewall exception
  5. Click Install and restart uTorrent.
  6. Try downloading the torrent again.

7. Set encryption protocol compulsorily

Try enabling the transfer protocol.

  1. Open uTorrent.
  2. go to Options> Preferences.
  3. Go to Tab links.
  4. Open the Encryption protocol.
  5. Choose With urgency.
  6. Click Enter.
  7. Restart uTorrent and try downloading again.

Torrents are not difficult to use but they rely on a good torrent client and for the torrent itself to have a reasonable number of peers.

If uTorrent doesn’t work, you can try one of the many other torrent clients available. You can also try to find another torrent for the same file.
