Email has been around for years and over the years, the number of email services has not changed much. Gmail is currently the most popular service and there are many smaller email services to fill a specific space.
Unlike email services, email messages tend to come and go frequently. Some are obsolete, some are obsolete, some are rebranded, but others are paused for other apps.
Microsoft is pretty much known for discontinuing some of its most popular / successful apps for new, less stable ones. Many of the blocked apps are still loved and searched by users. Windows Live Mail is one such example.
How to download Windows Live Mail
Windows Live Mail was part of Windows Live Essentials. It included amazing apps like the Movie Maker and the Live Writer which, hands down, was once one of the most popular desktop publishing apps.
Windows Live Essentials was available for Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7. Although the built-in apps are not actively developed, you can still install the Windows Live Mail app.
- Download Windows Live Essentials from Archive.org. You can download through torrent or your browser.
- Run the file to install the app.
- Select the ‘Select programs to install’ option.
- Uncheck all apps that you do not want to install. Make sure Mail is checked.
- Click Install.
- Open Windows Live Mail.
- Configure an email account to start using it.
Windows Live Mail was intended to work with Microsoft email service ie, Live account or Outlook. With the app no longer being developed, and Outlook still under development, the pair can no longer work together.
However, if you like the Windows Live Mail app just like an email client, you can use it to configure other email services eg, Gmail account and it will work fine.
Other email services must be set up such as IMAP and / or POP accounts. Most email services support this and there should be no problem connecting them though, Windows Live Mail may need some help to get the correct server address and port numbers.
Windows Live Mail is dead and there is no resurrection. Microsoft has a free email messenger on Windows 10 and it has Outlook. By the way, there is no place for Windows Live Mail yet. We should point out that while Windows Live Mail is great, using an old e-mail client may not be the best, most secure way to manage e-mail.
